How Far Ahead Should You Book a Removalist?

For most moves, book your removalist about four to eight weeks ahead. That window gives you the pick of dates and enough time to organise packing, any insurance you need and building bookings like a lift or loading dock. At peak times, the end of the month, Fridays, school holidays and over summer, aim for the longer end of that range or more, because the best crews are booked first. Moving at short notice is still possible, especially if you can take a midweek date or, for a flexible interstate move, use backloading.
Why booking early pays off
Booking early does more than reserve a truck. It gives you room to compare quotes properly, sort packing materials, arrange a lift booking or a parking permit, and line up your utility connections at the new address. Leave it late and you are choosing from whatever dates remain, often the least convenient ones, and paying less attention to whether the company is the right fit. A few weeks of lead time turns moving day from a scramble into something you have actually planned.
Early booking also matters for apartment and strata moves, where you often need to reserve the service lift or loading dock through the building manager. Those windows are limited and go quickly at busy times, so the sooner your removalist is confirmed, the sooner you can match the crew to the slot your building gives you.
When the busy periods are
Removalists have predictable peaks, and dates inside them get scarce well in advance:
- The end of the month. Most residential leases end on the last day of the month, so the final week is the busiest stretch of any month.
- Fridays and weekends. People move around work, so Fridays and Saturdays fill first. A Tuesday or Wednesday is far easier to book.
- School holidays. Families move when the kids are off school, so each holiday block sees a rush.
- Summer, roughly December to February. The warmer months and the new year are the busiest season of the whole calendar, and interstate routes especially tighten up.
If your move lands in one of these windows, add a couple of weeks to your lead time and book as soon as your date is firm.
How far ahead to book, by move type
Every move is different, but this is a rough guide to how much notice to give:
- Small local move (studio or one-bedroom apartment): two to three weeks.
- Standard local house move (three to four bedrooms): four to six weeks.
- Interstate move: six to eight weeks, and more if it falls over summer.
- Office or commercial move: six to eight weeks or more, so the work can be planned around your quietest trading days.
- Any move on a peak date (end of month, a Friday, school holidays): add about two weeks to the figures above.
Treat these as a starting point rather than a rule. The bigger the home and the further the distance, the more notice helps.
Moving at short notice
Sometimes a settlement is brought forward or a lease falls through and you need a mover next week. It is usually still doable, and a few choices open up dates:
- Go midweek. Tuesday to Thursday dates are the last to fill, so a short-notice move is far easier to place away from Fridays and month-end.
- Be flexible on the date. If you can give a window of a few days rather than one fixed day, a removalist can slot you in around existing jobs.
- Consider backloading for interstate. Backloading means your goods share truck space with other loads travelling the same direction, so you pay for the space you use rather than a whole truck. It suits interstate moves where your dates are flexible, because the crew fits your load around a route already running.
The trade-off with short notice is less choice of date and time, so the more flexible you can be, the better the result.
Common questions
How far ahead should I book for an end-of-month move? Give yourself at least six weeks if you can. The last week of any month is the busiest, so firm dates disappear early.
Is it cheaper to move midweek? Midweek dates are often easier to book and more likely to be available at short notice. For local work, ask whether the crew configuration, travel charges or other rate components change with the date.
What is backloading? It is when your belongings travel alongside other people's loads heading the same way, so the cost is shared. It works well for interstate moves when you have some flexibility on the collection and delivery dates.
Can I book a removalist a few days out? Often yes, particularly for a smaller move on a midweek date. You will simply have fewer time slots to choose from, so ring as early as you can.
Once you have a likely date, the easiest next step is to check what is open and get it held. You can see current availability or request pricing and we will confirm the date that works for your move.
