How to Plan an Interstate Move: A Step-by-Step Timeline

Plan an interstate move over six to eight weeks and it stays under control; leave it to the last fortnight and it rarely does. Start by decluttering and taking an inventory, get your quotes and book your removalist early, then work steadily through utilities, your change of address and packing so that moving day is mostly loading and waving goodbye. The countdown below breaks the job into weekly steps you can tick off as you go.

Why an interstate move needs a longer runway

A local move can be pulled together in a week or two, but crossing state lines adds moving parts. Trucks on the popular corridors book out around month-end and holidays, utilities in a new state take time to connect, and you cannot pop back for the thing you forgot. A six to eight-week runway gives you room to gather accurate quotes, choose your dates rather than take whatever is left, and pack properly instead of in a rush.

The other reason to start early is money. The more notice you give, the more options you have, including flexible-date choices like backloading that reward planning ahead.

Your interstate moving timeline

Work down this list from the top and each stage sets up the next.

6 to 8 weeks out

  • Declutter room by room, and sell, donate or dispose of what is not worth moving. You pay to move volume, so a lighter load is a cheaper one.
  • Make an inventory of what is coming with you, room by room.
  • Request quotes from removalists and compare what each one includes.
  • Book your removalist and lock in your dates once you are happy with the quote.

4 to 5 weeks out

  • Book time off work for the move and a day or two of settling in afterwards.
  • Order packing materials, or arrange for the crew to pack for you.
  • Tell your landlord or agent if you are renting, and confirm the notice you owe.
  • Start packing things you rarely use, like out-of-season clothes and books.

2 to 3 weeks out

  • Arrange to disconnect utilities at the old place and connect them at the new one, covering electricity, gas, internet and water where it applies.
  • Lodge your change of address with Australia Post, and update the bank, insurer, employer, Medicare and the electoral roll.
  • Confirm access at both ends: parking, lifts, stairs and any building booking.
  • Empty or run down anything that cannot travel full, such as the fridge, freezer and fuel-powered tools.

The final week

  • Pack everything except a clearly labelled essentials box for each person.
  • Defrost and dry the fridge and freezer a day or two before the move.
  • Confirm the plan, timings and contact numbers with your removalist.
  • Set aside valuables, documents and medications to carry yourself.

Moving day

  • Do a final walk-through, checking cupboards, the roof space and the garage.
  • Take meter readings and a few photos of the empty place.
  • Hand over the keys as arranged, and keep your phone charged for the crew.

Pack an essentials box you carry yourself

Set aside a box, or one per person, with what you will need for the first night before the rest is unpacked: a change of clothes, toiletries, chargers, medications, a few kitchen basics and anything the kids or pets need. Carry it with you rather than loading it onto the truck, so you are not opening thirty boxes at 10pm looking for a toothbrush.

Common questions about planning an interstate move

How early should I book an interstate removalist? Aim for four to six weeks ahead, and earlier again for month-end, school holidays or a long weekend, when trucks fill up first.

When should I organise utilities? Around two to three weeks out. Connections in a new state can take several business days, so it is not a job to leave to the last minute.

What is the one thing people forget? The change of address beyond Australia Post, especially the electoral roll, car registration and any subscriptions that post physical items.

Can I shorten the timeline if I am moving light? A small, flexible load can come together faster, but you still want a couple of weeks for quotes, booking and utilities.
